Phase-based process

In a project alliance, the general principle also applies that planning and design take place before construction. The overarching traditional phase structure (strategic planning, preliminary studies, project planning, tendering, realisation and management) is also applied in a project alliance, albeit in an adapted sequence with differently defined phase transitions. Individual alliance phases sometimes overlap.

Another important basic principle of construction in project alliances is the idea that the knowledge of the contractors carrying out the work should already be utilised in the planning phase (early contractor involvement). The most appropriate involvement of the contractor can vary from project to project. In the recommendations of factsheet 2065, this point in time is variable.
